With over 600,000 Catholics, 500 priests and deacons, several Catholic hospitals, and numerous schools based in northern Colorado, The Archdiocese of Denver brings together a large community year-round – with lots of opportunities for visual storytelling and creative collaboration.

Their parishes and churches operate food banks, soup kitchens, and hold clothing and toy drives. They offer mental health and counseling services and operate several social ministries while hosting a variety of programs and events, too.

Included in their mission of faith, guidance, and community building is the need to provide critical administrative, creative, and otherwise behind-the-scenes support to their parishes and ministries.

Finding the right solution for their archiving and storytelling needs came naturally. Aaron Lambert, The Managing Editor of the Denver Catholic (their publication), told us, “We had been familiar with PhotoShelter prior to our exploring the company as an option for our digital asset management needs, but by happenstance (or perhaps providentially), our Director of Creative Production was added to PhotoShelter’s email list, which led us to explore the option further.”

When it comes down to it, it was the ease of use and AI capabilities that made PhotoShelter stand apart from the other DAM options they were exploring. After all, it’s important for a historic and long-standing institution to stay up-to-date with the latest and greatest technological advancements.

“The Archdiocese of Denver has been in existence since 1887, and as we have moved into the digital age, we have accumulated quite an extensive amount of digital assets, not least of which is a robust photo archive documenting over 100 years of the history of the archdiocese,” Aaron told us.

“In addition to needing a platform to store all of these assets on, we also needed a user-friendly platform to easily share brand assets, photos and other digital collateral with the many parishes and ministries that we support. We feel that PhotoShelter will allow us to accomplish this goal.”

Aaron Lambert, Managing Editor

“Serving nonprofit organizations and religious communities is always a special opportunity as these mission-driven groups often have a deep archive of imagery and historical files to organize and share with the world, in addition to constant new events and special occasions happening year-round,” said our CEO Andrew Fingerman. “We’re excited to work with The Archdiocese of Denver as they look forward to documenting and sharing their story for the next 100 years and beyond.”

Founded in 2019, The Association of Pickleball Players serves professionals, seniors, and amateurs in the fastest-growing sport in the USA.

With a mission to champion all pickleball players that compete in their tournaments – from pro-level players to the next generation, as well as recreational players – a strong visual storytelling strategy helps the association elevate their athletes and gain more fans.

Prior to PhotoShelter, The APP was using Dropbox to organize their files. With no way to properly tag images, their team couldn’t search for and find specific assets easily.

After hearing about PhotoShelter through several colleagues who used the platform in previous roles, they knew they had found the all-in-one DAM solution to elevate their brand.

Now, The APP has a central location to store and organize their photography from all of their tour events, plus a platform that allows them to easily share galleries with players, sponsors, media, and more.

Louie Ruszkowski, Content Director at The APP, and his team are already taking advantage of PhotoShelter’s features like Smart Galleries. With this AI-enhanced feature, they can automatically curate existing and newly uploaded files together based on frequent searches and specific keywords.

“Ultimately, with the amount of players, sponsors and media outlets we’re sharing digital assets with, we needed to innovate and find a platform that streamlined that process for us. With PhotoShelter, having a branded portal that allows us to easily share assets with these various entities has been amazing for us. We love it!”

– Louie Ruszkowski, Content Director

“We are thrilled to support The Association of Pickleball Players as they continue to grow,” said PhotoShelter CEO Andrew Fingerman. “Pickleball is making a big impact on the sports industry, and we are proud to partner with The APP as they tell their story to the world.”

Founded in 2005, PhotoShelter is an industry-leading digital asset management solution that helps you organize, manage, distribute, instantly share, and collaborate with your team on digital content. With 5+ billion assets securely managed and nearly 100 million annual downloads, PhotoShelter is the fastest, easiest, and most intuitive way to manage and automate your end-to-end content workflow to drive your brand engagement, get better ROI from content and improve efficiency across your team. That’s why thousands of organizations and enterprises globally like Delta Airlines, FreshDirect, IMG Golf, Wendy’s, and more trust PhotoShelter with their success. Now, with the 2023 acquisition of Socialie, PhotoShelter is able to help brands activate the social channels of all their stakeholders via automated content distribution and better understand how social content is performing across partner channels, to exponentially expand their reach and drive more engagement.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks has invested in PhotoShelter to serve as its digital asset management system — a single source for organizing, managing, and distributing its brand content.

With seven campuses across the state, UAF is home to more than 7,400 students from all over the world. The university is renowned for its Arctic research, Alaska Native and Indigenous programs, entrepreneurship, workforce development, and hands-on, personalized learning.

Adam Rubin joined the UAF team as creative director in early 2023 and joined the ongoing conversation about the need for a centralized system to address the university’s digital challenges.

At the time, there were nine different Smugmug accounts across campus, random Google drives, and nearly 20 external hard drives with years’ worth of photos piling up. Content was outdated, difficult to sift through, and lacked the self-service setup necessary for their team to succeed.

With simple tagging tools and searchability available right out of the box, PhotoShelter was the perfect solution for UAF.

“Knowing that PhotoShelter is used by multiple major schools, but also pro sports teams, we knew it could handle the volume and was vetted by folks whose job it is to deliver media,” Adam told us. “That immediately set it to the top of our list. And then we went through the demo and realized, yes, this works for all of our photo needs and can facilitate the video that we have, too.”

PhotoShelter is already helping to streamline many of the UAF team’s creative workflows. As a university, model releases are an essential part of the content approval process. Properly identifying the people who appear in their imagery is a must, and PhotoShelter’s AI tagging has assisted in making that process easier.

“Leaning into PhotoShelter AI and utilizing the automated systems is the only way we’re ever gonna stay above water. Any photo request would typically take one photographer 2 to 4 hours to facilitate, and then you expand that — that’s more than an entire year’s worth of work saved from his plate so that he can continue to go out and capture new content, rather than constantly recycling old content.”

Adam Rubin, Creative Director at University of Alaska Fairbanks

“As our community of education clients continues to grow, we are very excited to empower the team at University of Alaska Fairbanks with a centralized solution for all of their content creation and distribution needs,” said PhotoShelter CEO Andrew Fingerman. “We look forward to growing with this team and seeing how they use PhotoShelter’s artificial intelligence tools to streamline their visual content workflow.”

PhotoShelter is the fastest, easiest, and most intuitive way to manage and automate your end-to-end content workflow to drive your brand engagement, get better ROI from content, and improve efficiency across your team. AI is becoming increasingly prevalent in everyday life, business, government, and more. However, as market demand increases and technology progresses, the innovation conversation too often precedes the ethics conversation. When ethical principles are not embedded into AI applications – from training models to data usage – authentic human creatives absorb the impact.

“All of these [AI] advancements have happened so quickly that it feels like the technology is far, far ahead of our comfort zone as people. I don’t think people feel as though there are enough measures and clarity… That’s the driving force behind our involvement with and dedication to the Content Authenticity Initiative.”

Michael Wells, VP of Strategic Projects, PhotoShelter

What is the Content Authenticity Initiative?

The Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) is a global coalition of over 1,800 leading tech and media companies, news publishers, camera manufacturers, nonprofits and others, working together to add a verifiable layer of transparency and trust to content online via Content Credentials.

Our membership in the CAI aligns with like-minded media and tech companies committed to ensuring brands and creators maintain proper attribution and credit.

Why Isn’t Our Creative Work Online Safe?

Metadata, data that provides information about rights and administration of an image, is a text field that can easily be edited – which can put the authenticity of photographers’ images and creatives’ work at risk of being falsified.

CAI certification, on the other hand, acts as a digital stamp that stays with your files over time, unaltered, as images are edited and distributed. These standards were created to ensure provenance authenticity, making it clear whether any significant changes have been made to an image.

“You can’t easily falsify a CAI record, whereas you can easily change any old metadata field,” Michael explains. “It’s a new kind of field, and it’s a special kind of data, which is protected in ways that other metadata wouldn’t be.”

Getting Involved: Why Is It Important?

The CAI thinks of Content Credentials as a “digital nutrition label” that shows important information or “ingredients,” such as the creator’s name, the date it was created, what tools were used and any edits that were made. Content Credentials can be easily adopted by any company or developer via its open-source toolkit.

“The Content Authenticity Initiative is doing incredibly important work that will allow its members to build and maintain widespread trust with content creators. At PhotoShelter, we’ve made it our mission since day one to protect brands and creatives alike, so joining forces with such a pivotal organization to further develop content attribution standards and tools made perfect sense. We look forward to continuing to solidify and extend our commitment to this community.”

Andrew Fingerman, CEO, PhotoShelter

Balancing Innovation and Ethical Responsibility

“We don’t want [people’s concerns about AI] to take away any confidence in the sort of work we do at PhotoShelter,” Michael explains. “We want people to enjoy the benefits of AI and get the reassurance that they’re being supplied by a company that is thoughtful and meaningful about the way it uses AI.”

That’s why, in addition to our commitment to the CAI, we’ve launched our very own AI Ethics Board. The Ethics Board will serve as our trusted advisor in advancing responsible AI based on a rigorous set of standards rooted in transparency and accountability. Read more about our board here.

Protecting artists and creatives is a top priority for PhotoShelter. All of our core company values ladder up to this initiative, and the trust, safety and security of our customers and their work.

Texas Ballet Theater has selected PhotoShelter to serve as their creative control center to organize, manage, distribute, instantly share, and collaborate on digital content.

Founded in 1961, Texas Ballet Theater (TBT) is a 501(c)3 non-profit that has grown from a small ballet into an internationally recognized organization.

The professional ballet company is part of the thriving arts community in North Texas, providing exceptional entertainment, accessible learning opportunities, and special programs year-round.

The ballet company had no comprehensive system to index over 60 years of images, videos, and other files or a fast and easy way to sift through those assets to share content with internal teams, performers, or external stakeholders – including 30+ vendors and partners, which can impact visibility and ticket sales.

PhotoShelter is exactly what Scott Dunagan, TBT’s Director of Marketing & Communications, was looking for.

Now, Scott can efficiently manage and organize the ballet’s digital content, adding an average of 5,000 new assets per year, and quickly find and share assets with those who need them.

“We share a good amount of content with our vendors and PR partners,” Dunagan explains. “PhotoShelter provides a holistic approach that meets all of our needs and, in some cases, dramatically exceeds our expectations.”

“It is a joy to welcome Texas Ballet Theater to our growing community of Arts, Media and Entertainment brands that trust PhotoShelter with their visual media,” said PhotoShelter CEO Andrew Fingerman. “We look forward to supporting them through their many public performances, community programs, and educational opportunities.”

Extension of PhotoShelter’s AI suite delivers massive leap forward in search capabilities and maximizes content ROI by removing the need for manual metadata tagging of image contents

NEW YORK – July 20, 2023 – Today, PhotoShelter, a leading AI-powered digital asset management (DAM) solution for seamless content distribution experiences, is expanding its AI product suite with a groundbreaking capability to improve content searchability. PhotoShelter’s AI Visual Search is a service that allows users to search their brand’s entire library for assets based on visual descriptions recognized by AI, making it easier and faster to find the right image for a specific application. A key benefit of AI Visual Search being metadata-less is the removal of any manual tagging requirements of image contents, an extremely time-consuming and human error-prone task.

At any given moment, DAM platforms hold hundreds of thousands of visual assets for an organization. When it’s time to locate and publish a specific piece of content, it can take hours to manually search for the right photo. Even the most advanced content organizations struggle to set up and maintain a comprehensive metadata strategy. This means stakeholders are not only wasting time searching for the right image, but also missing out on the best quality content because they simply can’t locate it. It would take an estimated 200 days to manually tag every image uploaded to PhotoShelter each month, and metadata-less search eliminates this incredible time-consuming challenge.

AI Visual Search uses language and image recognition to intelligently match search terms to visual qualities, removing the need for asset tagging and expediting go-to-market time. For example, AI Visual Search empowers users to locate images based on search terms like “fans giving a high five” or “students throwing graduation caps.” Since it does not require metadata, this function is optimal for scenarios where creatives have a general idea of what they want an image to look like, can sift through all relevant images, and choose which to use in projects or distribute.

“Organizations aren’t getting the maximum ROI out of their content because they have poor hygiene with tagging and keywording their images. This severely limits content discovery for teams, and with content production accelerating, this problem will only worsen,” said Andrew Fingerman, CEO of PhotoShelter. “We found that 40 percent of assets in PhotoShelter were not tagged, so we created one of the first market solutions that does the heavy lifting for our customers and streamlines their search. What was once a manual, difficult and time-consuming task is now a prime use case for leveraging AI to maximize efficiencies and bring better content to market. And the results are breathtaking – it’s like every conceivable keyword and caption has been applied automatically to our customers’ images.”

Artificial intelligence has the ability to streamline workflows across every industry, but only when it’s implemented correctly and thoughtfully. Technology innovators have a responsibility to ensure their tech is created for social good and is being used ethically. Thus, PhotoShelter is committed to aligning with content creators and ensuring they maintain control of their copyright, as well as guaranteeing it is shared ethically. In mid-2023, PhotoShelter launched a formal Ethics Board to routinely consider the ethics of its AI usage. Throughout the year, it will evolve to help inform decision-making on product innovation, improving training models and removing unconscious bias. The company will also be aligning closely with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) to track source images and determine if AI has been used in their creation to monitor and get ahead of disinformation and authorship issues.

“Our customers tell us it takes a dedicated full-time employee to fully and accurately tag all of their proprietary images,” said Chris Owyoung, Director of Product at PhotoShelter. “And for the past 30 years, the difference between organizational success and failure to find the perfect image has depended on whether or not it was tagged with the exact words you searched for. Now, we have removed this barrier. PhotoShelter’s AI Visual Search is not only an early market entrant, but also a game-changer for how content is discovered.”

AI Visual Search is just one of many PhotoShelter AI tagging capabilities. ObjectID automatically creates metadata tags for images based on the objects in them, for example “football” or “X-ray.” The company’s AI Tagging capability is perfect for advanced tagging where users need specific people or objects to be identified. BrandID, PeopleID, and RosterID tag people, player rosters and brands like “Boston Red Sox,” “Andrew Fingerman” or “Purdue University,” proving highly beneficial for sports, education, hospitality and more.
